Permissive design is a method that deliberately avoids prescribing fixed uses or meanings, leaving space for improvisation and appropriation. It frames design as an open platform rather than a determinate script, allowing users to shape outcomes through practice. Such openness resists over-determination but also carries risk: permissiveness can be read as abdication of responsibility. As a method, it foregrounds negotiation, chance, and plurality as core design values.
