Berresgasse

Designed by Karin Standler Landscape Architecture

Location: Austria, Vienna — Type: Residential Parks — Built: 2022 Show on Google Maps

My garden, my world.

The open space concept follows a nature-oriented design. The green wave as an idea for the pocket park ensures a microclimatic improvement with planting appropriate to the location. Retreats and places to linger with identity-creating design elements such as the “Berres-Bench” as a meeting place and resting spot are integrated. Instead of costly irrigation, natural infiltration areas are planned and habitats for reptiles and insects are taken into account. Diverse flower strips are created for butterflies and bees. Large trees provide shade and green rooftops with the possibility of rooftop farming ensures cooling at night. A modeled design zones courtyards, passages, and play areas, and determines the flow of movement away from the edges of the buildings. Between buildings and functional open spaces, buffer flower strips with flowers, grasses, and small shrubs suitable for the location are planted.

The middle zone of the park pocket is an open-use movement space. There are no facilities and no paved paths. At the edges are hills, the larger one facing south, which can be used for sledding in winter, and two smaller ones equipped with slides for different age groups and crawl tunnels. The pocket park features a forest-like selection of native tree species. The forest zone consists of a grove of trees and a meadow area. The areas are mowed 2-3 times a year. Play areas are embedded in the space, such as a willow tunnel, the edible forest, and a seating circle with a play stone for sliding. In the courtyard area, multi-stem trees are planted in dry biotopes made of gravel and crushed stone. The pergolas of the buildings are greened with climbing plants.
